Ubuntu Upgrade, New App

[Upgrading Fun]

I have been running Ubuntu 5.10 on my primary desktop machine since one of the first beta’s and it has been running beautifully. Today I decide to finally upgrade my laptop, which was running Ubuntu 5.04, to the latest and greatest.

This is the first time I have ever done an upgrade. In the past I have always done a clean install after every new release. I have always heard that Debian upgrades are a breeze with apt-get so I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype.

First I edited the apt sources.list file and replaced all mentions of “hoary” with “breezy”. then the magic:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then I just sat back and watched as it found all the packages it needed to update, calculated all the dependencies, and went about its business. After everything was done I rebooted and crossed my fingers…

Screen resolution….check
Wireless……………….check

One of the first things I noticed is that the network selection applet actually works! It appropriately displays the strength of the signal…something it did not do in 5.04.

Everything looks good!

[Addicting App]

Yesterday I discovered a new, addicting and basically useless, application called xdesktopwaves. From the website:

xdesktopwaves is a cellular automata setting the background of your X Windows desktop under water. Windows and mouse are like ships on the sea. Each movement of these ends up in moving water waves. You can even have rain and/or storm stirring up the water.

Today I wasted a good deal of time at work racing my mouse around the screen and moving applications windows to watch the waves bounce off the sides.

If you are running Ubuntu 5.10 you can install it simply by running:

sudo apt-get xdesktopwaves
