MS to Boost Compatibility?
I was just reading this article at ComputerWeekly.com entitled “Microsoft to boost compatibility with open-source software”. The quote at the end is what really drew my attention:
“At LinuxWorld in San Francisco next month, Hilf is planning to demonstrate the Indigo technology in Longhorn, the next version of Windows, which he said provides standards-based communications to Microsoft and non-Microsoft systems.”
More specifically the part where he talkes about “standards”, “communications”, and “non-Microsoft” in regards to Indigo. I must be going crazy, I swear that sometime last month I read an article that stated Microsofts position on Indigo saying:
“Microsoft has confirmed developers planning to clone Indigo or Avalon will have to first engage in talks on licensing the company’s Intellectual Property (IP).”
So now all of the sudden Indigo is a “standard” for “communications” between “Microsoft and non-Microsoft” systems? I am pretty sure this actually translates into the following: Indigo will provide a standard way for Microsoft systems to communicate to other systems as long as they are running a Microsoft product on the other system. This is what I absolutely love about .Net. they always touted in the begining that it was “cross-platform”, as long as the other platform was a Microsoft platform. So Java has been ported to how many different platforms and architectures?
MS wants to boost compatiblity with Open Source? How about helping out the WINE project or the Samba project? How about contributing to Mono (or at least allowing them to use the “Patented” technologies to create it themselves without hassle? How about helping to create “REAL” open standards or using existing open standards. How about helping to put an end to the practice of ridiculously patenting every damn thing in software (no matter how common or absurd the thing is).
