OS X with Intel Inside
As most have seen today Steve Jobs announced today that Apple will be transitioning today from PowerPC to Intel processors. This is going to be huge…or could be huge I should say…If they play their cards right. Unfortunately it looks like Apple is going to continue to hold OS X close at hand and not license it to other hardware vendors. I was also surprised that Steve Job’s demo machine was only running on a Xeon P4 processor and not one of the 64 bit chips.
Rosetta looks sweet though! It transparently translates PowerPC binaries to run on Intel processors with acceptable performance. Why couldn’t they use that technology to create an app like VirtualPC (VirtualMac?) for Windows (and Linux!) users to run OS X on PC’s now (like pearpc)? I would buy it!
Now if only I had $500 to sign up for a Select ADC membership + $999 for the developers kit with Intel processor.
