Linux in Devices

Nokia:

The big buzz of the day was the announcment today from Nokia about their new “Nokia 770 Internet Tablet“. The beautiful thing about this new device is that it runs Linux! It utilizes Gtk+, GStreamer, D-Bus, and even an x-server! Check out the screenshots, this device looks like it has real promise.

Nokia seems completely comitted to an open platform and have setup the Maemo.org site full of information about developing for the platform with API’s, tutorials, and how-to’s.

To top things off, later in the day Nokia announced “that it allows all its patents to be used in the further development of the Linux Kernel”.

Palm:

I also read today that PalmSource (or PalmOne or Palm?) has reaffirmed it’s commitment to developing a Linux backend for it’s PalmOS. A little while ago PalmSource acquired China MobileSoft, an embedded Linux developer. They announced that they will be porting Cobalt on top of Linux and that all apps developed for Cobalt will run on the Linux version. While they won’t be openning the source of Cobalt they have said they will contribute back to the Linux community.

All in all it seems like it was a good day for Linux on devices.
