Where’s my Laptop!
Since I purchased my new laptop from Dell on the 13th I have had nothing but hassle with the whole thing. First there was a problem with the fact that I used my debit card to pay for it and my bank, like most banks, has a $500 daily withdrawal limit. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem except I had used the card previously that day so the amount Dell attempted to take out would not go through. So after calling my bank, and calling Dell, and then calling my bank, and then calling Dell I finally got it to go through. Well, I think it went through. The status on my order on the Dell site has not changed? I called Dell to inquire about this and they ensured me that the payments have gone through and that it is in production….a week later! This sucks, I want my laptop!!!
In other laptop news it looks like HP is going to start selling several different laptops with Ubuntu! This is absolutely awesome news. I was literally thinking yesterday that it would be great if Canonical would push to get Ubuntu pre-installed on (or at least bundled with) new machines. According to the article on HeiseOnline, “the models nx6110, nc6120, nc6220, nc6230 and nc6000″ will be supported. All features will be available and in working order too! HP currently sells SuSE on several of it’s laptops and Mandriva (Mandrake) on several of it’s desktop lines.
Yesterday I also posted the next article on LinuxReview.net in the Linspire Analysis series. Michael Robertson, founder and CEO of Linspire, defended running-as-root as the default setup in Linspire. The thing is I feel Linspire has some real promise. They have definetly gotten better since their inception in terms of their product and with working with the community. The latest Linspire release, Five-0, is a huge step forward and their is lots to like…except that stupid root-as-default-user setup.
