The Duh Factor!
Today I read an article on eWeek by David Coursey, a journalist I’ve never been a fan of. He really goes out on a limb here and makes an amazingly profound statement/prediction. So here it is…MacOS X doesn’t have any viruses yet, but someday it might! Holy Crap! I am simply blown away by this mans ingenious insight. I don’t believe I have ever heard such a statement before about any other OS ever.
He then goes on to state that the sole reason that the MacOS doesn’t have any viruses is that it’s not as large a target as another well known OS by everybody’s favorite monopoly. I think I have heard that one before too, but I can’t put my finger on it. It’s no wonder this man gets PAID to write articles for mainstream technology publications, especially with such original, insightful, and thought provoking commentary.
GIVE IT A BREAK ALREADY!
I am so tired of hearing this same, lame, commentary by so-called journalists trying to make the justification that other OS’s are “just as insecure” as Windows. Let me make a really insightful statement here: ALL OS’s are vulnerable to attacks or security exploits! No OS will ever be able to guarantee forever a 100% risk free environment in a networked setting, especially without proper administration. All OS’s are vulerable, some are just better at mitigating your security risks than others.
Your network is only as safe/secure as your adminstrator running your network! You could be running one of the most secure OS’s available, but if you don’t keep up with the latest security bulletins and updates for your software it doesn’t matter.
I am also tired of the old “Windows is a larger target” argument. If that were “absolutely” always the case than how do you explain the fact that Apache crushes IIS in terms of number of webservers? Apache is obviously the larger target yet IIS is commonly referred to as the greatest security risk? How could that be…
