Linux with a Little Foresight…

Several days ago I came across a relatively new distribution called Foresight Linux which is supposed to showcase some of the latest technologies around GNOME. Some of the more interesting packages included in the current release are:

I always love being able to try the latest-and-greatest applications and is the reason I took interest in Foresight. Two applications in particular peaked my interest Beagle and Conary.

Beagle, for those who don’t know, is the new search and live-query tool or framework being developed by some GNOME people and will be included in the upcoming SuSE 9.3 Professional package due to be released in April. After messing around with it a bit all I can say is that it is very slick. Many of you might have seen the demo video’s Nat Friedman put online but it is definitely more impressive to see it in action for yourself.

The other application I was looking forward to checking out was Conary. Conary is, directly pulled from its website:

“a distributed software management system for Linux distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux system. Rather then having a full distribution come from a single vendor, it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from other repositories across the Internet.”

Overall it was pretty cool to take a look at but I could not get it to update any packages from it’s list of available updates. Maybe with some more time I could get it to work, interesting none the less.

Here is a gallery of screenshots I took while using Foresight:
